EFFECTS OF ^60CO GAMMA IRRADIATION ON THE SUBMAXILLARY GLANDS OF RATS

Abstract
Studies were done to see the effects of ionizing radiation to the submaxillary gland of rats on the contents of ascorbic acid and the contents and distributions of phosphorus compound, those are, total phosphorus,, lipid phosphorus, nucleic acid phosphorus, acid soluble phosphorus, and protein phosphorus, which are all important parameters on the cellular component changes in submaxillary gland.
Twenty-four, 48,72 hours after a single dose of 500, 800, 1,000 Roentgen of ^(60)Co gamma ray application to the whole body, 5 rats for each experimental group and 10 rats for control group were sacrificed, and the submaxillary glands rapidly removed; ascorbic acid contents were determined by Roe and Kuether, using 2, 4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine-thiourea copper sulfate reagent; after the phosphorus compound was fractionated by Schneider¢¥s method, phosphorus contents of each fraction was determined by Fiske-SubbaRow¢¥s method.
The results were obtained as follows.
1. Comparing to the control rats, slight decrease of the submaxillary gland weights of irradiated rats was observed.
2. Throughout the experimental periods, marked decrease of the phosphorus compound concentrations in each fraction were sustained by irradiations, irrespective of doses used.
3. Throughout the experimental periods, marked decrease of the ascorbic acid contents were sustained by the irradiations, irrespective of doses used.
4. Comparisons of phosphorus compound content and distribution between the control group and the irradiated group (500R. 24 hours) are as follows.
Acid soluble-P Lipid-P Nucleic acid-P Protein-P Total-P (mg. P/100g. fresh tissue)
Irradiated 45.8 27.1 29.8 11.2 113.9
Control 74.1 40.3 49.3 20. 3 184.0
